Afghan Borders to Crochet

There are many afghan patterns to knit and crochet. All require a finishing edge to help your afghan keep its shape. You can choose an edging and crochet it in the same colour as your afghan, a contrast colour or multiple colours.
 
PICOT
Rows 1, 2, 3
: sc.  (add more rows of sc for a wider edge)
Row 4: * sc 1 in each of next 4 sts, ch 4, sc around last sc *. Repeat between stars.
Change colour in Row 4 to emphasize the picots.
 
DIAMOND PICOT
Row 1: dc
Row 2: dc 2 in first st, ch 2, dc 2 in same st, * skip 2 sts, dc 1 in next st, skip 2, dc 2, ch 2, dc 2 in next st *. Repeat between stars.
Row 3: same as Row 2.
Row 4: * dc 2 around chain in row below, ch 3, sc in 2nd st from hook (picot), dc 2 in same space *. Repeat between stars.
DOUBLE PICOT
Row 1: dc
Row 2: dc 1 in first st, ch 1, dc 1 in same st, * skip 2, dc 1, ch 1, dc 1 in next st *. Repeat between stars.
FRINGE
Row 1: dc
Row 2: dc 2, * ch 1, skip next st, dc in each of next 2 sts *. Repeat between stars. This forms open spaces for inserting fringe.
SHELL STITCH
Row 1: dc
Row 2: * sc in next st, skip 2 sts, dc 9 in next st, skip 2 sts *. Repeat between stars.
For a double row of shells, continue as follows:
Row 3: ch 5, sc 1 in centre st of shell, * ch 3, dc 2 in sc of row below, ch 3, sc 1 in centre st of next shell *. Repeat between stars.
Row 4: * sc in between the 2 dc of row below, skip the 3 ch sts and dc 9 in sc of row below *. Repeat between stars.
Make as many rows as you wish and change colours each row.
MULTIPLE SHELL
Row 1: on the edge of the afghan, * sc 1 in each of the next 4 sts, ch 3, skip 2 sts *. Repeat between stars.
Row 2: dc 1 in first space, * dc 4, ch 1, dc 4 in next centre chain, dc 1 in next space *. Repeat between stars.
Row 3: * dc 4, ch 1, dc 4 on centre top of first shell, work a stem st around dc of previous row. (work stem st as follows: wrap yarn around hook and insert hook around dc in row below) *. Repeat between stars.
Rows 4, 5, 6: work same as Row 3.
Change colours each row.
TWEED EFFECT
Row 1: sc
Row 2: sc 1 in first st, * ch 1, skip 1, sc 1 in next st *. Repeat between stars.
Row 3: Change the colour, * work sc under ch st, ch 1, skip sc in row below *. Repeat between stars.
Rows 4 and 5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.
(Note: work more rows if wider border is desired).
Row 6: sc 1 into every st.
Row 7: work crisscross st as follows, * sc 1 in each of next 3 sts, wrap yarn around needle, insert hook around sc in 2nd row below (leaving the loop on hook), repeat the wrapping of yarn around needle, then yarn over needle and pull through all loops, skip the st behind the crisscross *. Repeat between stars.
BLANKET  EDGING
Rows 1 and 2: sc  (add more rows of sc for a wider edge)
Rows 3 and 4: Change to contrast colour and sc.
Row 5: Change to main colour, * work 2 long sc sts (over the contrast colour) into one st of main colour 2 rows below, ch 1, skip 2 *. Repeat between stars.
BEAN STITCH
Rows 1 and 2: sc
Row 3: ch 2, skip 2, * wrap yarn around hook and pull through a loop in next st, leaving loop on hook, repeat the wrapping of yarn around hook and pulling through the loops 3 more times (having 9 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull through all the loops *, ch 5, sc 1 in 3rd st from hook (picot), ch 2, repeat between stars to make another bean st in same st as the last bean st, ch 2, skip one st, sc 1 in next st. This forms one point, repeat from beginning of row.
ZIG ZAG
Row 1: * sc 1 in each of next 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2 *. Repeat.
Row 2: * sc 2 around ch of row below, ch 2, skip 2 sc *. Repeat.
Rows 3, 4, 5: Repeat Row 2.
Row 6: ch 5, sc in 2nd st from hook, hdc in 3rd st, dc in 4th st, tr in 5th st, sc in the ch 2 space of previous row. This completes one point. Repeat.
Points in Row 6 can be made of a different colour than the first 5 rows.
Coloured chains of yarn can be woven through the spaces formed by the first 5 rows.
