An animal cushion is an easy gift to
make for children and they are sure to love it. The basic body and
head are the same; vary the ears and tail to make many different
animals besides the dog and cat shown above.
1. Purchase two foam cushion forms; one
large for the body and one approximately 1/3 the size for the head.
2. Use fabric remnants or purchase sufficient to cover each. Choose
plain or variegated pattern; fur or cotton, or other soft fabric.
3. Set each form on the fabric and cut two circles for each, leaving
enough extra fabric to cover the sides.
4. With right sides together, centre the cushion form between the two
fabric pieces. Hand sew bias tape around the cushion form joining the
two pieces of fabric.
5. Sew the head to the body, either at the top of the body form or
sitting on top of the body form near the top. Use heavy thread and sew
securely.
6. Cut eyes, ears, nose and tail from felt and whip stitch to the
head. If the child is old enough, you may use purchased eyes.
Embroider whiskers. For the tail, try a braid of yarn.
