How to Crochet
Article by KarensVariety.com

Crochet is easy to learn with practice. All crochet designs are variations of a few basic crochet stitches. Once you learn the basic stitches, you can begin making doilies, bedspread, tablecloths, clothing accessories and much more.

The word "crochet" is a French word meaning "hook".  All that is required to crochet is a hook and thread or yarn. Hooks come in different sizes and are made from plastic or metal. Yarn can be used to crochet but usually thread is used. Thread sizes vary in thickness and come in white, ecru or colours.

Once you have learned the basic stitches, it is necessary to practice to keep your stitches even. This is your crochet tension.

Tips:
* Hold the thread in a way that is comfortable for you.
* Be relaxed or your tension will show in your stitches.
* Start with simple patterns such as a scarf or dish cloth.

Basic Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch ch st

Make a loop (lp) as shown.

Hold the crochet hook in your right hand, insert the hook in the loop, catch the main length of thread with the hook and pull through the loop. Pull both threads to tighten the loop on the hook.
When you read crochet directions, the first requirement is a foundation chain of a certain number of chain stitches.

Holding the main thread in your left hand, pass the hook under the main thread, catch with the hook and pull through the loop (thread over). This is your first ch st.

Practice making a foundation chain. It required practice to keep your chain stitches even in size.

Slip Stitch sl st

Insert the hook in the 2nd chain from the hook, thread over and draw through both the stitch and the loop on the hook. The slip stitch is used for joining.

Single Crochet sc

Insert the hook in the 2nd chain from the hook, thread over and pull through the chain so there are now 2 loops on the hook, thread over and pull through both loops on the hook.

* At the end of the row of sc, ch 1 to turn. This counts as a sc so on the return row, begin in the 2nd sc from hook.
* Insert the hook in top of the next st, picking up both lps of the st.

Half Double Crochet hdc

Thread over and insert the hook in the 3rd st from the hook, pull thread through so there are now 3 lps on the hook, thread over and pull through all lps at once.

* At the end of the row of hdc, ch 2 to turn. This counts as a hdc so on the return row, begin in the 2nd hdc from hook.

Double Crochet dc

Thread over and insert the hook in the 4th st from the hook, pull thread through so there are now 3 lps on the hook, thread over and pull through 2 lps on the hook, thread over and pull through the last 2 lps on the hook.

* At the end of the row of dc, ch 3 to turn. This counts as a dc so on the return row, begin in the 2nd dc from hook.

Treble Crochet tr

Thread over twice and insert the hook in the 5th st from the hook, pull thread through so there are now 4 lps on the hook, thread over and pull through 2 lps on the hook, , thread over and pull through 2 lps, thread over and pull through the last 2 lps on the hook.

* At the end of the row of dc, ch 4 to turn. This counts as a tr so on the return row, begin in the 2nd tr from hook.
