Materials: Steel crochet hook No. 7 or 8
Puritan Crochet cotton Article 40, 1 ball each Red and White
Six Strand Embroidery cotton Article 50 1 skein Red
Abbreviations:
 ch  chain
 st(s)  stitch(es)
 sc  single crochet
 dc  double crochet

Starting at top with Red, ch 29, 2 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of next 24 sts of ch, 3 dc in last st, ch 3, turn. The ch 3 counts as 1 dc at beginning of each row.

Row 2: 2 dc in same space (an increase of 2 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 28 dc, 3 dc in 3rd st of ch (an increase of 2 dc), ch 3 to turn all rows.

Next 3 Rows: Working in dc, increase 2 dc at beginning and end of each row (46 dc in last row).

Row 6: Increase 1 dc at beginning and end of row.

Row 7: Increase 2 dc at beginning and end of row, cut Red.

Row 8: Attach White, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, 1 dc in each dc, working 3 dc in 3rd st of end ch.

Rows 9 and 10: Increase 1 dc at beginning and end of each row. Work 2 rows even.

Row 13: Increase 1 dc at beginning and end of row. Work 5 rows even.

Row 19 and 20: Decrease 1 dc at beginning and end of each row (to decrease: * thread over hook, insert in next dc, pull loop through and work off 2 loops, repeat from* once, thread over and work off all loops at one time). Work 1 row even.

Row 22: Same at Row 19, cut White.

Row 23: Attach Red, ch 3, decrease in next 2 sts, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 47 dc, decrease in next 2 sts, decrease in next 2 sts.

Next 4 Rows: Decrease 2 dc at beginning and end of each row.

Next Row: Decrease 3 sts each side, decreasing in same manner as previous rows, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Insert hook in 1st st, pull loop through, insert in next st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sts (sdc: thread over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), 1 dc in each of the next 16 dc, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 dc, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sc decrease in next 2 sts, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Sc decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 8 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, sc decrease in the next 2 sts, cut thread.

Work another section in the same manner.

With embroidery cotton, crochet a ch about 20 inches long. Sew in centre of White section sewing to the 5 centre rows as illustrated.

Crochet the 2 sections together with a row of sc using Red on Red sections and White on White sections.

With Red, cover a bone ring with sc and sew to the top of the potholder.
