Published by Patons and Baldwins Ltd Alloa
and Halifax |
This is a
PDF Digital Reproduction
of a knitting and crochet guide from the 1940s, with 84 pages plus Index.
|
Patons and Baldwins was formed
in 1920 by an amalgamation of two textile firms; John Paton Son and Company, of
Alloa, Scotland and JJ Baldwin and Partners of Halifax, England. This would
appear to be one of the earlier Woolcraft books from that era. |
Most of the patterns are knit; there are 3 baby
patterns, the circular shawl and ladies gloves in crochet. The book contains chapters about:
-
Materials
and instructions regarding wools, needles and hooks, and use of a Teazle
Brush. Many of the patterns in this book call for Teazle wool which is
brushed to give a fluffy look to garments. According to the book, many
knitters prefer not to brush the Teazle wool as it looks beautiful in its
original form.
- First Lessons in Knitting covering casting
on, knitting in rounds, tension, slipping a stitch, knitting plain, purling,
casting off, grafting, decreasing, increasing and has pictures and
instructions for the various pattern stitches.
- First Lessons in Crochet covering single,
double, treble, long treble, joining plus a description of different pattern
stitches.
