Priscilla
Hardanger Embroidery Book

No. 1

Published by

Boston, Mass.
1909

This is a PDF Digital Reproduction of a book published in 1909, with 48 pages.  Hardanger is a region of Norway where this form of embroidery originated.  Stitches are worked in a pattern and the centre portion of fabric is cut away. It is usually worked with white thread on white fabric.  Special Hardanger canvas can be used, or linen.

"As the square is the principal upon which Hardanger embroidery is based, any fabric woven with a square mesh so that the warp and filling are the same size may be used.  When the threads are drawn, a perfect square must always result."

"The one absolutely necessary requirement is the correct counting of threads."

"All work must be embroidered before any threads are cut."

"The only materials necessary for the work are a pair of scissors, very sharp, and with pointed ends...Two sizes of working thread are necessary.  The coarser is for the embroidery or blocking, and the finer for the weaving."

This book explains the different stitches (see picture):

"The two principal or foundation stitches for Hardanger embroidery are the satin or kloster stitch used for the solid parts of the design, and the over-and-under weaving used in the drawn spaces.  These two stitches are varied so as to form a great number of decorative effects."

These stitches are then formed into designs to make borders, runners, centerpieces,  or used to decorate corners or edges of tablecloths, curtains, belts, towels, pillow covers, clothing or even button covers. A sampler is suggested as a good beginning.

I own many items with Hardanger embroidery as my grandmother was Norwegian; they have stood the test of time well as I know they were used and not just kept for decoration.  One of the most beautiful and elegant forms of decoration!
