Priscilla
Crochet Book

Edgings and Insertions

Published by
The Priscilla Publishing Co.
Boston, Mass.
1913

This is a PDF Digital Reproduction of a book published in 1913, with 48 pages.  The book contains instructions and pictures for many different edgings and insertions.  Some are fairly plain and some are quite elaborate.  No width sizes are given so judgement of size will have to be made from the pictures.  Some are thin enough for handkerchiefs and some are quite wide.  The stitches used are the same as used in modern crochet; chain, slip stitch, double, half treble, treble, double treble, long treble and picot.  Many of the designs are unique; all are stunning!

There is an Explanation of Stitches and Directions for 105 Figures, some of which are edgings and some insertions.  There are matching sets although only a few are paired.  On close inspection, it would appear that many are similar enough to be interchangeable.

I have paired the most obvious sets in the third picture plus the insertions.  The first two pictures contains pictures of the edgings included.  There is also one set to make the Linen Centerpiece with insertions in edging in filet crochet also pictures in the third set.

"All of the edgings in this book were made of No. 100 Cordonnet crochet cotton excepting those in which the number of cotton is specified in the directions.  For No. 100 cotton use a No. 13 hook, for No. 70 cotton a No. 12 hook; for coarser cottons use a hook that will carry the thread easily without splitting it."
