DO YOU KNOW? That in 1850,
American ladies made dresses from directions in a book, just
as you would follow a recipe for baking a cake? Here are
directions for making a skirt, quoted from the American
Ladies' Memorial, "A useful book to every Lady throughout
the United States": To make a skirt, "you should pin or tack
together the breadths of the skirt at the top, before you
begin, so that you may not chance to put in more gores on one
side than the other, or find that the hind breadth comes to
one side". Six more
long paragraphs finish the directions. What an undertaking it
was to make a skirt about a century ago! Certainly ladies of
those days had to have more time and patience than nowadays,
with our easy-to-follow paper patterns. |

combination article and pattern, originally an advertisement,
from
McCall Needlework magazine, Winter,
1944-45, with a graph
for a Pennsylvania Dutch design for use as embroidery,
applique, tole painting. I have enlarged the graph on a
separate page for easy use; print as large or as small as you
wish with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Use the flowers and bird
together or use separately to complement each other. |
