Hemstitching
Article |
| Both my grandmothers were
immigrants (from England and Norway) so needlework crafts were common
pastimes when I grew up. Despite their efforts to teach me, I learned
to knit, crochet and sew but never learned the delicate, fine arts that
they both had mastered. I love old pattern books; many I used
growing up but there are many others to browse through. They are a
wonderful source of nostalgia.
From time to time, I find an article
that is intriguing or perhaps a little different.
Hemstitching is still popular but most
is done by machine now and is used on linens or baby items.
This
article from a Workbook magazine reminds me of peasant blouses from
the 60's and 70's and hairpin lace. The hand hemstitching could be
used to create lovely bands around sleeves or collars. Make a pocket
with this ornamental needlework and line with a contrasting colour.
Use on handmade purses, belts; the possibilities are limitless.
Heavier materials such as linens would, I expect, be easier to work
with when beginning.
If anyone has used this type of
needlework, I would love to post some pictures or add your tips or
feedback about your creation. |
