Two Needle Mitts for Children

Materials: Sport yarn.
Choose needle size from chart below.
Abbreviations:
 k  knit
 p  purl
 st  stitch
 inc  increase
 tog  together

Knit these mittens on two needles in different sizes. Make them plain or decorate with duplicate stitch or coss stitch.

  Size 2 Size 4 Size 6 Size 8 Size 10 Size 12
Cast on 40 stitches with: Baby yarn Baby yarn Sport Sport Worsted Worsted
Using needles size: 1 2 2 2 3 3
K 2, p 2 rib for: 1 1/2 2 2 1/2 2 1/2 3 3 1/2
Change to needles size: 2 3 4 4 4 5
K stockinette st for: 4 rows 4 rows 4 rows 4 rows 6 rows 6 rows

Continue as follows for right mitten:

Using contrast colour and following chart k first 18 sts according to chart; inc in next st, by knitting into next st of row below, and then k the st itself; k 2; inc in next st as before, k last 18 sts in main colour. P next row following chart for last 18 sts.

Next row: working from chart k first 18 sts, inc in next st, k 4, inc in next st, k last 18 sts in main colour.

Next row and all alternate rows p following chart for last 18 sts.

Working from chart, k first 18 sts, inc in next st, k 6 sts, inc in next st, k 18 sts.

Continue in this manner, following chart for front of mitten until there are 12 sts between increases. (There will be 52 sts on needle).

K 19 sts, put next 14 sts on safety pin to be worked later for thumb. Continue with same thread and k last 19 sts.

Continue on these 38 sts following chart for front of mitten through the design for the girl. Do not start top border until mitten is about one inch from desired length.

Then following chart work first 4 rows of top border.

Row 5: K 5, k 2 tog, * k 4, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. End this and all remaining k rows with k 1. You will note that the decreases occur between black figures.

Row 6: P across, following chart for last 14 sts.

Row 7: Follow chart, k 4, k 2 tog, * k 3, k 2 tog; repeat from * across.

Row 8: P across, following chart for last 12 sts.

Row 9: Follow chart, k 3, k 2 tog, * k 2, k 2 tog; repeat from * across.

Row 10: P across, using main color for this and remaining rows.

Row 11: K 2, k 2 tog, * k 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across row.

Row 12: P 2 tog across row.

Remove stitches from needle, insert a crochet hook through all sts. Pull length of yarn through the sts with hook and fasten securely. Leave a length of yarn to sew up mitten.

Pick up thumb sts. K in stockinette st for desired length of thumb. K 2 tog across row. Remove needle and fasten as for top of mitten. Sew up seams.

The left mitten will correspond with the right.
