You can easily sew blocks for babies or
young children. Choose sturdy fabric in different colours. Keep in mind
that babies put everything in their mouth so the fabric should be not be
fluffy and should be prewashed and colour safe. Baby skin is very
sensitive so a sturdy cotton material would work well.
Cut out squares of a size of your choice,
suggested, four or five inches, again remembering that they must be big
enough not to fit in baby's mouth. You will need six squares for each
block. Make each square a different colour; bright colours, pastels,
prints, or pictures.
If your fabric does not fray, you can
whipstitch the edges together making stitches small enough so that fingers
can not fit in the stitches. If your fabric does fray, sew the edges by
machine or by hand. Assemble your block into a cross shape, then sew up
each side. Stuff with cotton batting and sew on the top square.
