Girls Bonnet

Materials: knitting worsted yarn
No. 2 and No. 5 knitting needles
Abbreviations:
 k  knit
 p  purl
 inc  increase
 st(s)  stitch(es)
 beg  beginning
 dec  decrease
Tension:
 Stockinette Stitch  5 1/2 sts = 1"
 7 rows = 1"
 Pattern Stitch  8 rows = 1"

Knit a lovely bonnet with a brim for a toddler girl.

Pattern:
Row 1: (wrong side): K across.
Row 2: * P 1, inc 2 sts in next st (k1, p1, k1 all in 1 st). Repeat from * across.
Row 3: * P3, k1. Repeat from * across.
Row 4: * P1, k 3 tog, inserting needle in back loop of sts. Repeat from * across.
Row 5: K across. K 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row. Repeat these 10 rows for pattern.

Front Band:
With No. 2 needles, cast on 80 sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1".
Change to No. 5 needles. Work stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 5 rows.
Work in pattern until about 3 3/4" above ribbing, ending with 5th pattern row.
Bind off 27 sts in knitting at beg of next row, k across.
Bind off 27 sts in purling at beg of following row, p across.
Continue in stockinette st on 26 centre sts for back of bonnet for 2" more.
Dec 1 st at beg and end of every knit row 10 times.
Bind off remaining 6 sts.
Sew sides of back to bound-off sts.

Neckband:
With No. 2 needles, working on right side, pick up and k 52 sts evenly spaced on neck edge of bonnet, including the 2 sides of ribbed band.
Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3/4".
Bind off in ribbing.

Brim:
With No. 5 needles, working on right side and holding front band toward you, pick up and k 1 st in every st of last row of front band (80 sts on needle). P 1 row.

Inc row:
* K 1, inc 1 st in next st; repeat from * across (120 sts on needle).
P 1 row.
Continuing stockinette st, bind off 3 sts at beg of each of next 12 rows, ending with purl row.

Facing:
Cast on 3 sts at beg of each of next 12 rows (120 sts on needle).
Work 1 row.

Dec row:
* P 1, p 2 tog; repeat from * across (80 sts on needle).
Bind off.

Finishing:
Sew together sides of brim and facing on wrong side; then turn brim knit side out and sew bound-off edge to front band.

Cord:
Make cord of 3 strands of yarn, each 3 1/2 yds long.
To make cord: twist yarn twice the length of the desired cord in opposite directions between thumb and forefinger. Still holding the ends, catch the cord at centre over a hook, release and allow the 2 halves to twist around one another. Tie ends.

Tie a knot at each end, a bow in the centre.
Tack bow to centre front of bonnet behind the brim.
Tack cord to sides of bonnet and use ends to tie.
