Size 5 pearl cotton or silk or rayon thread
30 yards of main colour
3 yards of green
flower wire
size 3 crochet hook

Crochet a lovely carnation flower to wear as a lapel pin, or as a decoration for gifts, purses or clothing accessories. You can vary the size by using larger size thread and crochet hook. Make these flowers using cotton crochet thread or a softer thread; choose bright or pastel colours or variegated. Make several different sizes and group together.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc in third ch from hook, * 2 more dc into same st, 1 dc into base of last dc, repeat from * until there are 45 sts; join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 tr in st at base of ch, 3 tr in dc around.

Rnd 3: Ch 4, sl st in fourth ch from hook, sl st in next tr, repeat around. This makes a lacy edge.

For flower base and centre, ch 3, join, make 5 or 6 sc in r, join, make 3 or 4 rows like this. Then ch 3, sc in first st, ch 3, 1 sc in each st around. Pull lps through the centre of flower and sew together, fastening wire in centre of flower. Cover wire with thread by twisting stem with one hand and holding thread tight in the other.
