Knit a pullover sweater for a toddler boy or
girl in stocking stitch with ribbing at hem and sleeves, button shoulder
seam. Choose a graph picture, bear, duck or bunny, for the sweater front
in duplicate stitch.Other than the
ribbing, this pullover sweater is worked completely in stocking-stitch.

BACK:
With 2 No. 11 needles and contrasting yarn, cast on 76 sts.
Row 1: * K 2, P 2. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat this row 4 times. Change to yarn of main colour.
Row 6: Knit
Repeat Row 1 5 times. Change to contrasting colour.
Row 12: Knit.
Repeat Row 1 5 times.
Change to No. 9 needles and yarn of main colour.
Beginning with a knit row, work even until back measures 8 inches. End
with a purl row.
To Shape Armholes:
Row 1: Cast off 2 sts. Knit to end of row.
Row 2: Cast off 2 sts. Purl to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows once.
Row 5: K 2 tog. Knit until 2 sts remain. K 2 tog.
Row 6: Purl.
Repeat last 2 rows 3 times (60 sts)
Work even until back measures 12 inches. End with a purl row.
To Shape Left Shoulder:
Row 1: Cast off 9 sts. K 12. Cast off 18 sts. K 21.
Row 2: Cast off 9 sts. P 12. Turn.
Row 3: Cast off 3 sts. K 9.
Cast off remaining 9 sts.
To Shape Right Shoulder:
Join yarn at neck edge of remaining 12 sts.
Row 1: Cast off 3 sts. Purl to end of row.
Cast off remaining 9 sts.
FRONT:
Work the same as the back until the armhole shaping has been completed and
the front measures 10 inches. End with a purl row.
To Shape Right Side of Neck:
Row 1: K 26. Cast off 8 sts. K 26.
Row 2: P 26. Turn. Work on these 26 sts only for right side of
neck.
Row 3: Cast off 2 sts. Knit to end of row.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat last 2 rows once.
Row 7: K 2 tog. Knit to end of row.
Row 8: Purl.
Repeat last 2 rows 3 times (18 sts)
Work even until this side of front measures 12 ins. End with a knit row.
To Shape Right Shoulder:
Row 1: Cast off 9 sts. Purl to end of row.
Row 2: K 9. Cast off.
To Shape Left Side of Neck:
Join yarn at neck edge of remaining 26 sts. and work this side to
correspond to right side of neck and shoulder.
SLEEVES:
Using 2 No. 11 needles and contrasting yarn, cast on 36 sts.
Row 1: * K 2, P 2. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat this row 4 times. Change to yarn of main colour.
Row 6: Knit.
Repeat this row 5 times. Change to yarn of contrasting colour.
Row 12: Knit.
Repeat Row 1 5 times.
Change to yarn of main colour and No. 9 needles.
Increase from 36 sts to 42 sts in following manner:
* K 5, M 1 (throughout this pattern, "M 1" is always in the stitch).
Repeat from * to end of row.
To Shape Sleeves:
Beginning with a purl row, work 5 rows even.
Row 6: M 1. Knit until 2 sts remains. M 1.
Repeat these 6 rows 8 times (60 sts)
Work even until sleeve measures 8 ins. End with a purl row.
To Shape Top of Sleeve:
Row 1: Cast off 3 sts. Knit to end of row.
Row 2: Cast off 3 sts. Purl to end of row.
Row 3: K 2 tog. Knit until 2 sts remain. K 2 tog.
Row 4: P 2 tog. Purl until 2 sts remain. P 2 tog.
Repeat last 2 rows until 18 sts. remain. Cast off.
To Make Up:
With contrasting yarn, work a graph picture in duplicate stitch.
Join side, sleeve and right shoulder seams.
Fit and sew in sleeves.
To Finish Neck:
Using a set of 4 No. 11 needles and contrasting yarn, begin at shoulder
opening to pick up and knit 80 sts around neck. Work backward and forward
on needles.
Row 1: * K 2, P 2. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat this row once. Change to yarn of main colour.
Row 3: Purl.
Repeat Row 1 twice. Change to contrasting yarn.
Row 6: Knit.
Repeat Row 1 once.
Cast off in rib.
Work 1 row of single crochet along back and front of shoulder opening,
making 2 chain-stitch loops on front edge for buttons. Sew buttons to back
to correspond.
