Knit a warm toque for a boy or girl
around 8 years old, in a cable pattern with or without a pom pom.
Ribbed Band
Cast on 108 sts (36-36-36). Join.
Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 4 inches.
Increase for Crown
Rnd 1: * K8, M1 (by knitting into front and back of stitch).
Repeat from * 11 times (120 sts on needles).
Rnd 2: * K9, P2, K8, P2, K9.
Repeat from * 3 times.
To Make Pattern
** Rnd 1: * K9, P2, K8, P2, K9. Repeat from * 3 times. Repeat
last round 6 times.
Rnd 8: * K9, P2, Slip next 4 sts
on to a spare needle and place at back of work. K 4 sts from left-hand
needle on to right-hand needle. Slip the 4 sts from spare needle back on
to left-hand needle, then knit them on to right-hand needle (1 cable
twist). P2, K9. Repeat from * 3 times.** Repeat from ** to ** twice (24
rounds of pattern)
To Shape Crown
Rnd 1: * K7, K2 tog. Pattern 12 sts, K2 tog, K7. Repeat from * 3
times.
Rnd 2: * K8. Pattern 12 sts, K 8.
Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 3: * K6, K2 tog. Pattern 12
sts, K2 tog, K6. Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 4: * K7. Pattern 12 sts, K7.
Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 5: * K5, K2 tog. Pattern 12
sts, K2 tog, K5. Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 6: * K6. Pattern 12 sts, K6.
Repeat from * 3 times.
Continue decreasing in this manner 8 sts
every 2nd round. (1 st each side of the 12 pattern sts) until there are 8
decreasings from beginning (56 sts on needles).
Rnd 17: * S1, K1, PSSO, P1, K8,
P1, K2 tog. Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 18: * K1, P1, K8, P1, K1.
Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 19: * S1, K1, PSSO, K8, K2
tog. Repeat from * 3 times.
Rnd 20: Knit.
Rnd 21: K2 tog, 20 times.
To Finish
Break wool, draw through remaining sts. Draw up tightly. Fasten securely
on wrong side. Turn ribbing back for 2 inches. Sew a
pom pon to the top if
you wish.
