This pattern is a simple yet beautiful
floral design to practice cutwork embroidery. You may make the rose large
or small as you wish.
Cutwork embroidery is one of the most
beautiful forms of needlework. A design is embroidered and portions of
fabric in between the stitches is cut away leaving small holes in the
work. It is therefore very important that you do not cut the stitches when
you have completed your embroidery.
Trace the cutwork rose design onto your
fabric.

Work all the edges which are to be cut in
buttonhole stitch
as follows:
Form a loop of thread, insert the needle
down through the loop and up through the fabric at the desired point.
Pull the little knot which is formed gently into place along the edge.

You may use the buttonhole stitch throughout
or use satin stitch only on the double lines which are not to be
trimmed. If you use the satin stitch, work over and over the double
lines keeping the stitches even and closely spaces.
Work two rows of running stitch around all
the double lines before the buttonhole or satin stitch are made. Make the
bars in running stitch as they must be completed before making the
buttonhole stitch. As each bar is reached, join two threads the length
indicated by the bar, securely to the fabric. Now work a row of buttonhole
stitch across to the opposite side being sure never to allow the needle to
catch material.
Embroider all single vein lines in outline,
stem or backstitch.
When all the embroidery is completed, press
on the wrong side with a damp cloth. Use small scissors to but away all
portions marked with an X. Be very careful not to cut the bars but always
cut material from behind them.
