Free Crochet Pattern

Materials: Size 3 crochet hook
String weight crochet thread
Abbreviations:
 ch  chain
 sl st  slip stitch
 lps  loops
 r  ring
 dc  double crochet
 st  stitch
 p  picot
 sc  single crochet
 hdc  half double crochet
 tr  treble

Ch 36 loosely, join with sl st in first ch to form a r. Ch 3 (for first dc), dc in each st around, join with sl st in third ch of ch 3 first made. Make another row of dcs. For the next 3 rows, sc in each dc, decreasing in every 10th dc. Work 5 rows of plain sc, then decrease again in every 5th st, until 9 to 12 sts remain. Sc or sl st these sts together; fasten off.

Beak: In yellow, ch 3, sc in center ch and continue around, increasing once or twice until there are 6 or 7 sts or until beak is about 3/4 inches long - thus a cone shape is formed. Join to one side about 1 1/4 inches from edge, leaving bill slightly rounded.

Comb: In red, take 16 sc from top of beak over head. Into each sc make 2 sc, ch 2 to turn. Sc in first st, 2 sc in each sc across comb.

Rose Comb: 3 sc in every st of third row; fasten off. For a pointed comb: 1 sc, 2 dc, 1 tr, ch 3, and catch to last tr to make p for point, tr, 2 dc, 1 sc, sl st. Make 4 more such points; fasten off.

Wattle: In red and just below beak, take up 8 sc. Work 3 dc in first sc, 3 tr in next, 3 dc in next 2 sts twice, 3 hdc in next 2 sts twice, 3 sc in each of last 2 sts, turn.

Sl st across all scs, 3 sc in each of next 2 sts, 3 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 3 dc in each of next 5 sts, 3 tr in each of next 4 sts, 3 dc in each of next 2 sts, 3 hdc in last st; fasten off.

Eyes may be loops of yarn of heavy French knots of thread.

Rabbit: Use same base and simply add ears:

Ch 6, sc in second ch from hook and to end, always ch 1 to turn; in next row, make 5 sc, three rows of 7 sc, increasing in first and last st. Next row, decrease to 6 sc, then 6 rows with 5 sc, decreasing one at a time until a single st remains. Sew to head in desired position, add lines for expression with black floss.
