Make cute novelty pins to use as party
favours, bazaar items, or just to delight someone. Make the pins out of
felt and sew a small safety pin at the back to fasten. Be creative and try
different petals and colours.
Sunflower:
Cut two petal pieces in yellow or gold felt. Lay one gold petal piece on top of the other, overlapping the petals.
Poppy:
Cut five petals of red felt, blanket stitch
in black around the outer edge of the petals, overlapping them slightly so
the poppy will cup a little when completed, and join together.
Bonnet:
Cut the bonnet in brown felt and notch the
edge as shown or pink with pinking shears. Pull the wedge shaped piece in
the bonnet together and sew edges with invisible stitches. Place the
bonnet piece in the centre of the sunflower or poppy petals, and tack all
pieces together through the centre with several stitches.
Faces:
Cut two faces from felt (tan, natural,
beige, brown, black), embroider facial features in outline stitch on one,
using 1 or 2 strands of embroidery floss. Make eyebrows, upper portion of
eye using brown, hair and eyes in your choice of colour, nose and lips red
or pink.
Whip the two face pieces together (front and
back), leave a small opening, stuff lightly with cotton and whip the
opening shut.
Centre the face on the bonnet and fasten
securely at the back.
Optional Bells:
Cut a 4-inch length of green felt 3/8 inches
wide, fold in centre and tack to the petal piece in the centre under the
bonnet. Fasten a small bell on each end.
