With right side facing, change to No. 11 needles and stocking-stitch, starting with a knit row, and shape sides by increasing 1 stitch at each end of 17th (23rd) and every following 6th row until there are 130 (142) sts, then at each end of every following 4th row until there are 134 (146 sts)

Next Row: Purl

Introduce the lace pattern in the centre.

Next Row: K 60 (66) MC, join in CC and pattern 14 as 1st row of lace pattern, join in 2nd ball of MC, k 60 (66).

Next Row: P 60 (66) MC, pattern 14 CC as 2nd row of lace pattern, p 60 (66) MC. Twist yarn at back of work when changing colour to avoid a hole. Continue thus in stocking stitch and lace pattern, working one complete pattern over centre 14 sts and at the same time increasing 1 st at each end of next and following 4th row: 138 (150) sts.

Next Row: Increase in 1st st, k 55 (61) MC, pattern 26 CC as 1st row of lace pattern, k 55 (61) MC, increase in last st. Work a further 7 rows in lace pattern and stocking stitch, increasing 1 st at each end of every alternate row 146 (158) sts.

Now continue in pattern, taking an extra 12 sts into the lace pattern as before on next and every 1st pattern row until 9 complete patterns have been done from start of yoke, and there are 110 sts in lace pattern.

Shape Neck:

Next Row: K 5 (11) MC, pattern 48 CC, turn and leave remaining stitches on a spare needle.

Next Row: P 2 tog, pattern to last 5 sts, p 5 (11) CC. Continue in pattern, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on next and following 2 alternate rows. Pattern back.

Shape Shoulders: With right side facing,

Next Row: Cast off 8 (9), pattern to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.

Next Row: In pattern. Continue in pattern, casting off 8 (9) sts at beginning of next and following 4 alternate rows, armhole edge.

With right side facing, rejoin CC yarn to remaining sts, cast off centre 26, pattern 48 CC, k 5 (11) MC.

Next Row: P 5 (11) MC, pattern to last 2 sts, p 2 tog. Finish to correspond with first shoulder.

Back:

Work exactly as for front from ** to **, 132 (144) sts. Continue in pattern, taking extra 12 sts into lace pattern on next and every following 1st pattern row until 8 complete patterns have been done from start of yoke, and there are 98 sts in lace pattern.

Here divide for Back Opening.

Next Row: K 11 (17) MC, pattern 50 CC, k 4 CC.

With right side facing, shape shoulder by casting off 8 (9) sts at beginning of next and following 5 alternate rows. Cast off remaining 18 sts loosely.

With right side facing, rejoin CC yarn to remaining 66 (72) sts, k 5 CC, pattern 50 CC, k 11 (17) MC. Finish left shoulder to correspond with right.

Neckband:

Join shoulder seams. With wrong side facing, No. 11 needles and CC yarn, pick up and p 104 sts all around neck. Work 8 rows in lace pattern. Cast off loosely. With No. 12 crochet hook and CC yarn, work 1 row of dc all around neck edge and down each side of back opening. Break yarn. Now work a row of picots all around neck edge as follows:

Next Row: Right side facing, 1 dc in 1st dc, * 4 ch, 1 dc in first of these 4 ch, miss 1 dc, 2 dc in 2 dc; repeat from * to end, then continue down right side of back opening and work a 2nd row of dc, making 4 small button loops evenly spaced.

To Make Up: (Optional)

Thread a needle with MC yarn and starting in centre diamond at start of yoke, embroider 2 knitting stitches as shown in diagram. Take yarn loosely up back of work to next diamond at right and work 2 sts in the same way. Continue thus embroidering diamonds up right side of slope to shoulder. Fasten off. Join yarn to left of centre diamond and work left slope of yoke to correspond, thus forming a V of embroidered diamonds.

Now work another V starting in centre of yoke in 3rd diamond up from start. Continue thus until 4 V shapes have been worked, finishing with 1 diamond in centre of neck edge. Work back to correspond, embroidering 5 V shapes. Embroider centre of diamonds all around neck in the same way. Press yoke very lightly.

Join side seams. With crochet hook, work 3 rows dc around each armhole edge in MC and finish with a row of picots as for neck. Press seams. Sew on buttons.
