Fringe or Animal Mittens
Free Crochet Pattern

LEFT MITTEN: Starting at tip of fingers, ch 2.

1st Rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Note: Pick up back loop only throughout.

2nd Rnd: 2 sc in each sc around - we sc.

3rd Rnd: Sc in each sc around.

4th Rnd: (Carry a colored thread up between last sc and next sc to indicate side of mitten, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) twice - 16 sc.

5th Rnd: Sc in each sc around.

6th Rnd: (2 sc in next sc, sc to one sc preceding next marker, 2 sc in next sc) twice. Repeat last 2 rnds alternately until there are on rnd:

Stitches  20     24     28     28     32

Continuing to carry colored thread up, work even in sc rnds until mitten, when tried on reaches base of thumb or measured from tip (inches):

3 1/2     4     4 1/2     4 3/4     5     5 1/4

ending in sc preceding first colored thread. Drop loop from hook.

THUMB: Starting at tip and using a 2nd ball, ch 2.

1st Rnd: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

2nd Rnd: 2 sc in each sc around.

3rd Rnd: Increasing evenly spaced

Stitches   1     2     2     2     4     4

sc in each sc around. Work even on these

Stitches   9     10     10     10     12     12

until thumb, when tried on reaches base of thumb or measures from tip:

Inches   2 1/4     2 1/4     2 1/4     2 1/4     2 1/2     2 1/2

Break off leaving a 6-inch length of yarn.

THUMB GORE: Thread yarn into a needle and sew next 2 sc of thumb to next 2 sc following the dropped loop on Mitten. Pick up dropped loop on Mitten and work as follows:

1st Rnd: Sc in next

Stitches:   7     8     8     8     10     10

sc on thumb, sc in next 2 sc on mitten, place a marker on last sc worked, sc in each sc on mitten to within last sc on mitten, place a marker on last sc worked.

2nd Rnd: Draw up a loop in next 2 sts, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook - 1 sc decreased, sc in each sc to within 2 sc before next marker, dec 1 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd.

3rd Rnd: Sc in each sc around. Repeat last 2 rnds alternately until their remain:

Stitches:   19     24     24     28      28     32

Next Rnd: Repeat 3rd rnd decreasing 1 sc at both sides of mitten. Work even for:

Rounds:   1     1     2     2     2     3

Next Rnd: Inc 1 sc at both sides of mitten. Work even for 1 1/4 inches on last rnd, join last sc with sl st to first sc.

Next Rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, * ch 2, sc in both loops of next sc. Repeat from * around. Join as before. Break off and fasten.

For Fringe Mitten only:

Fringe: Starting 1 1/4 inches up from wrist edge and working across sts on back of hand between colored threads, attach yarn to free loop of first sc, ch 1, and draw loop on hook out to measure 1 1/2 inches, * insert hook in free loop of next sc and draw loop through, ch 1, and draw loop just made up to height of previous loop. Repeat from * across to last sc before next colored thread. Keeping last 2 loops on hook, drop remaining loops from hook, turn mitten and work across sts of preceding rnd in same manner. Continue to work across each row toward tip ending on 4th row of mitten Break off and fasten. Cut loops open to form fringe.

RIGHT MITTEN: Work as for Left Mitten until piece is same length as left mitten to thumb ending in 3rd sc preceding colored thread. Drop loop from hook. Continue as for Left Mitten until completed.
