A versatile lacy motif reminiscent of a snowball which could be used to make a buffet set, bedspread, tablecloth, table runner, or chair set. Vary the size of the hook and thread to make larger or heavier motifs.

Motif
Ch 10, join with sl st to form a r.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 23 sc in r, sl st to beginning to join.

Rnd 2: (Ch 7, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc) 8 times.

Rnd 3: * (1 sc, 1 hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) over ch 7, repeat from * around; work 3 sl st to first dc of first petal.

Rnd 4: * (Ch 5, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc) twice, ch 5, sc in first dc of next petal; repeat from * around; for last sp, ch 3, dc at base of beginning ch.
This brings thread in position to begin next rnd.

Rnd 5: * Ch 5, sc in next ch 5 lp, repeat from * around, end as before.

Rnd 6: * (Ch 8, sk one lp, sc in next lp; repeat from * around; join with sl st at base of first ch 8. You should have 12 lps.

Rnd 7: (1 sc, 1 hdc, 9 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in each ch 8 lp around, join.

Rnd 8: Sl st up to first dc of next scallop, sc in each of first 2 dcs, * (ch 4, sl st back in third ch for a p, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next) 3 times, sc in next dc, ch 1, sc in each of first 2 dcs on next scallop, repeat from * around.

Second Motif
Follow directions of first motif for first 7 rnds.

To join second motif to first:
Ch 3, sl st in adjacent p of any scallop, ch 1, sl st back in second ch st, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 3, sl st in next p of same scallop, ch 1, sl st in second ch st, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next) twice, sc in next dc, ch 1, and continue around as in rnd 8 of first motif.

Join third motif, leaving 2 free scallops between joinings of motifs; continue around with ps as made previously.

Join fourth motif, leaving two free scallops of adjacent motif and join by ps as before. Work ps across 2 scallops on fourth motif, then join third scallop to next motif.

Fill-in Motif
Work rnds 1, 2, 3 of large motif and join with 4th rnd as follows:
Sc in each of first 2 dcs, ch 3, sl st in centre p of any free scallop on large motif, ch 1, sl st back in second 2 dcs, ch 3, sc in each of first 2 dcs ch st, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in each of next scallop of small motif, join as same motif.
