An easy to knit stocking cap in three sizes knit of contrasting coloured bands.

With MC cast on 96 (100-104) sts.
Work K 2, P 2 ribbing for 2 3/4 inches.
Work stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 2 3/4 inches, end with a P row.

Pattern Stripe:

Row 1: (right side) * With MC, K 1; with CC, K 1. Repeat from * to end.

Row 2: * P 1 MC, P 1 CC. Repeat from * to end.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice.
Repeat Row 1 once again.
Fasten off CC.

1st Dec Row: With MC
P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 88 (92-96) sts.
K 1 row, P 1 row for 19 rows.

2nd Dec Row: P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 80 (84-88) sts.

2nd Pattern Stripe:
Repeat 7 rows of pattern stripe.
Fasten off CC.

3rd Dec Row:
P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 72 (76-80) sts.
K 1 row, P 1 row for 19 rows.

4th Dec Row:
P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 64 (68-72) sts.

3rd Pattern Stripe:
Repeat 7 rows of pattern stripe.
Fasten off CC.

5th Dec Row:
P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 56 (60-64) sts.
K 1 row, P 1 row for 19 rows.

6th Dec Row:
P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 48 (52-56) sts.

4th Pattern Stripe:
Repeat 7 rows of pattern stripe.
Fasten off CC.

7th Dec Row:
P decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across row - 40 (44-48) sts.
K 1 row, P 1 row for 13 rows.

Break off leaving an end, draw end through all sts and fasten securely.

Finishing:
Sew back seam. Steam.
Trim with tassel.

Tassel:
Cut a cardboard the desired length of tassel. Wrap yarn around cardboard as many times as you wish. Tie a piece of yarn around top strands, leaving ends for joining. Cut bottom strands. Wrap yarn several times about 1/2 inch from the top, tie and conceal ends in tassel.
